The port and chief city of Guadeloupe, Pointe a Pitre, lies on Grande-Terre. Unfortunately, it doesn't have the old-world charm of Fort-de-France on Martinique, and what beauty it does possess is often said to be hidden behind closed doors.
Modern apartments and Pointe a Pitre form a high-rise backdrop over jerry-built shacks and industrial suburbs. The rather narrow streets are jammed during the day with a colorful crowd that creates a permanent traffic jam. However, at sunset Pointe a Pitre is said to become quiet again and almost deserted.Walking Distance of the Pointe a Pitre the only charm left is said to be around the waterfront.
Most visitors who stay in Pointe a Pitre just drop in to Pointe a Pitre for shopping. It's best to visit Pointe a Pitre in the morning (you can easily cover it in half a day), taking in the waterfront and outdoor market (the latter is livelier in the early hours).

With the recent completion of the Centre St-John-Perse, a $20 million project that had been on the drawing boards for many years, the waterfront of Pointe a Pitre has been transformed from a bastion of old warehouses and cruise-terminal buildings into an architectural complex comprising of one of the Pointe a Pitre, three restaurants, 80 shops and boutiques, a bank, and the expanded headquarters of Guadeloupe's Port Authority.
